House color ideas
- Use the 60-30-10 rule: 60% dominant colour, 30% secondary colour and 10% accent colour
- Choose a colour scheme and use throughout the home
- Black is great to use as an accent – it clarifies and enhances the other colours in the space
- Use upholstery, art or a rug to get inspiration for colour
- Use darker colours on floor, medium on walls and lighter on ceiling if you are stuck on how to use colour
- Remember that there is emotion in colours – decide on what emotional response you want from people when they are in the room (e.g. Blues are calming)
- Use the seasons for inspiration: Fall – create more calm spaces with yellows and brown, Spring/Summer colours can be more uplifting
- Try the colours before you buy – if you are considering art work, rugs or upholstery, always bring it home and try it out for a few days. The colour will change depending on the lighting. Remember that depending on the direction of the natural light, it will affect how the colours look in the room. Dark colours will look darker in north facing rooms. South facing rooms will have the opposite effect.
